Synchronous vs. Conjunctive Binding: A False Dichotomy?
It is argued that claims about the superiority of synchronous binding methods are premature. A hypothetical explanation for synchronous firing is offered, which portrays such firing as a symptom of a deeper binding process that employs conjunctive nodes. It is shown that only a feasibly small number of conjunctive binding nodes would be required in the deeper process.
متن کاملMachine Translation vs. Translator Aids: A False Dichotomy
Advances in Computers The past 30 years have been a period of rapid development for computers and their uses. In computer hardware, we have seen a progression from vacuum tubes to transistors to integrated circuits to microprocessors. In computer uses, we have seen an expansion beyond military and business applications that includes computeraided design and manufacturing, bibliographic data ret...
متن کاملFood self-sufficiency and international trade: a false dichotomy?
In the wake of the 2007-08 food crisis that brought higher and more volatile food prices, many countries expressed increased interest in pursuing policies to bolster their levels of food self-sufficiency. At the same time, there has also been widespread critique of policies designed to support food self-sufficiency, on the grounds that they are inefficient and can disrupt trade. This debate has...
متن کاملFamilial versus sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis--a false dichotomy?
Familial versus sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis—a false dichotomy? Historically, there has been a surprising level of uncertainty about whether amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), in its typical form, has a genetic basis. No less a figure than Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–93), at least initially, held the view that the disease he first named was never familial (Charcot and Joffroy, 1869). ...
متن کاملContext-free versus context-dependent constituency relations: A false dichotomy
In this paper I articulate a notion of constituency orthogonal both to classical and connectionist approaches. I shall consider three “structure-in-time” connectionist networks (Simple Recurrent Networks, Long Short-Term Memory Models, and Non-classical Connectionist Parsers). I shall argue that explaining compositionality by means of any of these models drives us to an information-processing b...
